Currently Obsessed With: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

I don't know how many of you like musicals, but there actually are some good ones out there. You just have to do a little searching. A friend mentioned Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog to me, and being a Joss Whedon fan, I had to check it out. The plot is pretty simple; Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) is trying to get into the Evil League of Evil, but his arch-nemesis, Captain Hammer (Nathon Fillion) always foils his amazingly Evil plans. Complicating matters is the fact that Captain Hammer starts dating Penny, whom Dr. Horrible has a total crush on. The title comes from the fact that Dr. Horrible has a video blog where he's usually either complaining about being foiled by Captain Hammer, or making his maniacal plans known to everyone who's computer-capable.

Now, if the cast and/or plot hasn't piqued your interest, there's something terribly wrong with you. There's still hope, though, because I haven't mentioned the songs yet. They're not only funny, but everyone can sing, and all the numbers are really well done. I'm not very well-versed in the world of musicals, but I would guess there are plenty of them out there that don't have all three of those things going for them.

Dr. Horrible was made during the writers guild strike in 2007-2008. Whedon wanted to do something cheaply but professionally, so he funded the production himself. I love that man. The entire thing is only 42 minutes long, and it's available instantly on Netflix. Honestly, though, as soon as I finished watching it, I bought the Blu-ray on Amazon. I'll most likely be watching it again this weekend, and I recommend you do the same.

A man's gotta do...what a man's gotta do.

  2. Only knew Nathan Fillion from Firefly. Than, my wife started watching him on Castle. Only other thing I saw him in was a movie I caught on Chiller called White Noise 2. It was pretty good. But a musical. Not for me.

  3. I was hooked on this when I first saw this last year. LOVE Fillion in this, I wish they'd make a feature film based on Capt. Hammer!

  5. @William, I said the same thing about musicals not being for me. Then I started watching the good ones. Still, they're just not for some people.

@Ruth, I would call the Captain Hammer feature "Captain Hammer: These Are Not the Hammer"

@Duke, much appreciated. We'll attempt to keep up a semblance of good work.
