What Was Your First Blog Post?

I'm in the mood for something a little different this week, and I've decided to put my usual smart ass shenanigans aside.............for now. I'm curious to know what was the first thing you ever posted to the blogosphere? Whether it was an oh so serious critique of the latest art house film or a list of your favorite flicks starring Steve Guttenberg, you had to start somewhere. I liken my first post to the wall of shame every adult person dreads their friends and significant others seeing. You know what I'm talking about. The wall at your parents house adorned with photographic evidence of just how awkward and dorky looking you were growing up. Bad haircuts, missing teeth, and questionable fashion are front and center on the wall of shame.

The Welby Wall of Shame

I think it's a fair comparison because we've most likely all evolved as writers during our blogging journey, and there's probably some older material that we'd just prefer to keep buried in the deep dark corners of the web. Bring your first post back from the shameful dead with me and and ponder these three questions. I'll start.

  1. What was your first post about?
  2. How do you feel about it looking back?
  3. How have you evolved as a writer?

1.) My first substantial movie post was a review of one of my favorite haunted house films. 2.) I'm my own worst critic as we all are, and I don't exactly look back fondly on it when I read it now. 3.) I found out that I enjoyed poking fun at films and the industry more than simply posting reviews and news.

Who's got next?

  1. In terms of my blog, my opening post was about watching Sixteen Candles for the first time. I started out by doing a marathon of '80s comedies that I hadn't seen before last March. I thought it was good at the time, but it doesn't seem so great now. I feel like I've found a clearer voice during the past year. One fact is that my posts have gotten a lot longer, which I'm not sure is a good thing.

If I go further and think about my first movie review that went out to other people, that was a review of The Game for my college newspaper in 1997. I cringe to read that now. It's very plot-heavy and spends most of the time summarizing what happens. Blah.

    1. that's funny because I find my older reviews taking the extremely plot heavy angle as well. looking back on it I'm thinking "why am I telling everyone what happens?" then they wouldn't need to watch!

  2. My first post was after going to a free screening of Wall-E that I went with someone with the press and I wanted to be the one getting invited not a "guest". So I began a small little blog called "Chicks and Flicks" and was wanting to have a team of girl writers. Blog failed, but the first review was of Wall-E. It still one of my better reviews. I think when I put my mind to it, the reviews get better with time. But that first one always will hold a place in your heart.

    1. Interesting that you still look back fondly on your first review. I'm not so crazy about mine, but again, we all start somewhere!

  3. 1.My first official post was a review of Franklyn
2.I don't look too badly on it either. I mean i do think my other full review for Diary of a Nymphomaniac is better, but i don't think anybody's best post is there first post.
3.I like to think i've evolved as a writer.

    1. Franklyn? hmmmmm...don't know about that one. Did your review endorse the film or not so much?

    2. It was a definite endorsement.I wish more people would see it

  4. Hmmm I think I took part in a Cowboys and Aliens review. Looking back, even though I said the film was terrible, I don't think I adequately described the level of suck.
I think I have gotten better at warning people about terrible films and trying not to correct people on the internet. ;-)

    nice post topic

    1. very cool. So still fairly new to the whole blogging thing huh? Only been doing it about 3 years myself. We don't really do reviews here anymore....at least not normal ones.

  5. I put up a bunch of reviews before I let anyone know about my blog so that I'd have some things for people to look through.

They were all reviews, and some of them, well... were a little off the mark I guess you could say. LOL. Wish I could have a redo on a couple of those grades. But just like anything else, you dont really know how to review until you actually DO it.

    1. yeah, I found out fairly quickly that I wasn't the best reviewer. I didn't really enjoy writing them either. Plus there are so many more talented writers out there for that.

  6. 1. A review of Blood Diamond. It is...not good. http://blogcabins.blogspot.com/2006/12/blood-diamond.html

    2. It's not a terrible first attempt, but far from my best showing, either. I was still trying to figure out a style that worked for me, which I'm not sure I ever did (as a straight-up critic).

    3. God, I hope so.

    1. AHA! going to be checking out that review for Blood Diamond! My real first post on this site was a Conan review which I hated so much I deleted it. I should have left it up and wore that badge of shame proudly!

  7. My first was a review of Dirty Pretty Things

    http://greenpeoplesoup.blogspot.com/2009/01/review-dirty-pretty-things-2002.html

I just read it over, and I actually like it quite a bit. But some of my other stuff...not so much. I always find it hard to read my old stuff after a while. Not sure why; I know what's in there.

I used - and overused - hyphens a bit in this one, and I think a lot of my old reviews could use touch-ups, but I won't bother. They can stand on their own, and hopefully I'm better now than I was then.

And that Conan review was SHIT.
