GPSerious: My own collection.

Steps 11 & 12:

I pray, Morgan Freeman, that you continue to guide me and remind me to put away the stacks of like 30 movies I currently have sitting on my kitchen counter. Sorry about that. I also want everyone reading this to know that Morgan Freeman really does care about you and the horrible ways you put a movie down and forget to put it away later.

GPSerious: Are You A Movie Hoarder? GPS Is Here To Help!

I'm not quite as obsessed as I used to be, but after collecting DVDs and now Blu-rays for the past twelve years, I've amassed quite a huge stockpile of cine-wonderful entertainment. There's an unfortunate downside to being a rabid collector. On any given night, simply trying to find my copy of "The Lost Boys" was like venturing into the warehouse at the end of "Raiders." A daunting task that usually ends up with me cussing and suffering from "Two Corey" withdrawal symptoms. Oh the insanity!

GPSerious: Birthdays - October 18th

Oh, man. I don't know who to feature this time, since three awesome people have birthdays today. Screw it, they're all getting the nod.

Most worthy for October 18th:

Jean-Claude Van Damme (51)

George C. Scott (would be 84)

Klaus Kinski (would be 85)

GPSerious: The Sexual Innuendo of Forbidden World.

I'm a fan of innuendo. Countless films use it to spice up the chemistry between leads, and when done well, it can excite you and make you want to see how a relationship pans out. And then there's Forbidden World, which was supposed to be some kind of Alien rip-off. It also uses innuendo, but it sounds more like dialogue from Forbidden World, Where People Fuck in Space. That movie has yet to be made, but I'm not beneath doing things for a paycheck. Hollywood agents, I hope you're reading.

Birthdays - October 8th

I'm trying something a little different this time. Instead of picking just one birthday and making a post about that person, I'll list the people I think are notable and showcase the one I feel is most worthy. Let me know if you guys prefer it this way or the way we've been doing it up 'til now. I also realize this has been a very sporadic thing so far, and it probably will be until someone else wants to do this every single day. So for now, I'll just do it when I feel like it. Like today. Hooray for birthdays!

Most worthy for October 8th:

Paul Hogan (72)

Fuck You, Paul W.S. Anderson. No, Really. Part 1.

There's always discussion between myself and Markus about how some filmmakers are just pretentious and boring. They tend to make bloated, obtuse films that only make sense if you know ahead of time what to look for. Call it high art if you want; I don't really care. The reason I bring that up is because even though we like to make fun of the snooty crowd, the opposite end of the spectrum is just as bad. How do I know? Paul W.S. Anderson just proved it to me with Resident Evil: Afterlife.

Happy Birthday Scott Baio!

Not only is it Scott Baio's 51st birthday, but he's also been in the news recently for having a lot of girlfriends, to which I say: who gives a shit. I was all set to mock him for not being in anything since around the time of the silent German era, but then I remembered something awesome.

Bob Loblaw.

Again, sincere birthday wishes from everyone at GPS.

When Product Placement Attacks!

I'm actually pretty amused by this example

I know it's a necessary evil. I realize that corporate sponsorship helps foot some of the bills on a film production budget. I understand that many people actually use the products advertised on a daily basis, but I also hate it when product placement in movies is blatantly obvious. I should be able to just let it go..............laugh it off...........learn to accept it. But I can't always do that. There are instances where it works tremendously, but far too often, I just get distracted by shameless product plugs. Here's a few examples that really annoy me followed by one that I accept and love wholeheartedly. Stay tuned and I'll be back after these important messages!

R.I.P. Amy & Forever 27 on Film

I admit to never really knowing her music well other than her famous "Rehab" song, but I appreciated the true talent that belonged to Amy Winehouse. She sadly couldn't get her demons in check and joins the "Forever 27" club alongside other music legends who left us all too soon. Hollywood has often tried to pay tribute to.....or cash in..... on the stars who burned brightly but shortly in the entertainment world with varying degrees of success.  Here are three notable attempts to give us a glimpse of life and death in the "Forever 27" club.

Happy Birthday Geoffrey Rush!

For 43 more minutes, it will still be Geoffrey Rush's birthday. I really need to get better at checking birthdays BEFORE 11:30 at night. I'll get better as I get more accustomed to wishing people I'll never meet a long life, etc. Anyways, Rush turned 60 today, so let's make with the remembrance and such!

Peter Falk (1927-2011)

All over the web, the news of Peter Falk's death has come in one flavor: something to the effect of, "Peter Falk, TV's Columbo, dead." Falk was amazing as Frank Columbo, but I'd like to show you a different character of his. In 2001, Falk played a mob boss in Jon Favreau's comedy classic, Made. He wasn't in the movie a hell of a lot, but he stole every scene he was in. He gave that sort of performance that made me believe he was that character. Even in his short amount of screen time, I really thought he could have me whacked if he wanted to; all he had to do was pick up the phone. I don't think one scene does justice to a lifetime of acting, but I do think this is a fitting tribute. I have to be careful to keep on topic here, because Vince Vaughn is something else in this film. It's his best role, by far, and I would say it's the epitome of his personality. I might write something up on the film at some point, but I digress. Enjoy a fucking awesome Peter Falk performance.

Django Unchained 101: Let's talk about the title

There are two things in my film life that I consider myself to be somewhat knowledgeable of. One is the spaghetti west and the other is Quentin Tarantino's body of work. I'm kind of a biased fanboy when it comes to the former video store geek and while I don't get all the references he has peppered into his flicks, I can usually get some of it. See....you have to be careful when viewing the hyper ones work all right.....he'll try to trick and mislead you all right. Let's take "Inglorious Basterds" for example. That movie wasn't about a group of ragtag soldiers on a suicide mission to kill Hitler. That was merely a clever disguise designed to show you his love of European cinema and present you a foreign film made by an American. Now let's get to the bottom of "Django Unchained" all right.

Five Reasons Why Total Recall is Awesome.

Before Arnold Schwarzenegger was proven to be an asshole larger than his governing state, he was busy making sweet love to audiences in the form of all kinds of awesome ass-kicking. First on that list, as far as I'm concerned, is Total Recall. When was the last time you watched that movie? If it's been more than a few years, I'd say it's time to dust it off and re-live Arnold's glory days.

Super 8 : Are coy trailers a lost art?

The internet makes it difficult sometimes for me to be a completely pure movie fan. What exactly does that mean? It's getting harder to go into a theater fresh in a day and age where websites and blogs shed light on every little detail about a movie before it's released. I'm trying to turn over a new leaf when it comes to movie spoilage which is why I very much appreciated the way they marketed "Super 8." I knew Abrams and company were going for the retro Spielberg vibe, but was still blissfully ignorant when I bought my ticket. I kind of feel that showing an audience just enough to peak their interest without ruining the plot should be standard trailer 101 strategy, but I'm realistic enough to know that approach won't always work. There have been many times when I've turned to a movie buddy after a trailer and said "well they've shown me the entire plot in two minutes." I think that has happened to all of us at some point, but don't you love it when the powers that be can slip in a surprise every now and then? Here are some of my favorite mystery trailers.

X-Men: First Class (what did you think?)

I saw this opening night and can easily say it's my favorite in the series. I think the studio seemed a little leery about an installment of the franchise without fan favorite Wolverine, but Magneto steps in mightily in the role of ultimate badass and Hugh Jackman's presence is not missed at all in my opinion. See it to watch lead duo Fassbender and McAvoy make sweet mutant magic together. If "Ocean's 11" had sex with the James Bond franchise their kid might be "First Class."  Did anybody else see it? What did you think?

X-MEN First Class: 3 Reasons To Be Excited

In a movie season guaranteed to be over crowded by heroes in tight fitting outfits, how is one supposed to choose which film in the genre to be enthused about? We've got men with hammers, men with lanterns, and men with shields. I'm putting my vote in for the men with class. When "X-MEN: First Class" hits the multiplexes, here are three reasons to apply to Xavier's School For the Gifted.

Solomon Kane: None for you America!

I patiently waited for this film to hit American shores, but it was sadly not meant to be. Based on the writings of Robert E. Howard who fathered Conan the Barbarian, Kane is a Puritan warrior who wanders the land and fights various forms of evil. He uses his wits, magic, and sometimes just brute force to send the Devil's minions back to hell. The 2009 film takes a little liberty with the source material and gives us sort of an origin tale chock full of action, horror, and all the things true genre lovers appreciate. This is dark material so I guess it's really no surprise that it never got picked up by a U.S. distributor. I can't imagine how they would market it, or what the MPAA would have rated it. Thank goodness for region free DVD players because this gem of a title can be easily imported and viewed by all worthy fans of a kick ass good time.

Poltergeist II : LET KANE IN to your movie collection!

If anybody's family has ever been impacted by cancer, then they know what true horror is all about. Watching a loved one waste away to a shell of their former self can be heart wrenching. My Grandmother passed away from it, my mother in law is currently fighting it, and we have a family friend whose prognosis is dire. For those who can relate, Poltergeist II might be too much to handle. The cinephiles brave enough to watch will glimpse a real beast captured on film. Now.....let me in.....and lets talk about it.
